11 Unique Things to Do in Habarana | Ultimate Travel Guide

Unveil the charms of Habarana. From majestic elephants to tranquil moments by the lake, this essential travel guide has got you covered.

Are you looking for a convenient place right in the middle of Sri Lanka‘s Cultural Triangle?

That’s Habarana for you, not just a dot on the map, but a cozy nook that puts you smack dab in the epicenter of history, nature, and some seriously cool wildlife.

So, why make Habarana your home base?

First off, its location is unbeatable. You’re minutes away from places that are straight out of a history book – Sigiriya with its sky-high fortress, the ancient ruins of Polonnaruwa, and the sacred vibes of Anuradhapura.

Plus, the place itself has a charm that’s hard to ignore. It’s where you can truly chill after a day of exploration. Surrounded by greenery and home to roaming elephants, it’s the spot to breathe in that fresh, jungle air and maybe even spy some wildlife without trying too hard.

Choosing Habarana means you get the best of both worlds – easy access to Sri Lanka’s historical gems and a peaceful retreat at the end of an adventure-filled day. It’s like staying at a friend’s place who happens to live in one of the most culturally rich areas on the planet!

History of Habarana

Historically, Habarana served as a vital link between ancient kingdoms, including Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and Sigiriya, which are within approximately 60 to 70 kms (37 – 43 mi) of Habarana. This made it a critical transit point for traders, pilgrims, and even armies moving through the area.

The development of Habarana as a tourist destination has been relatively recent, within the last 40 to 50 years, coinciding with the broader push to promote Sri Lanka’s cultural and natural heritage to the world. Its growth has been mindful of its ecological footprint, with many of the resorts designed to blend with the natural environment and support conservation efforts.

Top Things to Do in Habarana

Habarana Lake

1. Relax by Habarana Lake

Habarana Lake is a man-made reservoir and the calm waters and the surrounding landscapes make it an ideal spot for picnics, bird watching, or simply enjoying a quiet moment.

The area around the lake is dotted with walking paths, allowing for easy strolls that offer stunning views of the water against the backdrop of the distant hills. The evenings bring spectacular sunsets too! It’s a perfect place to end your day.

Habarana Hurulu Eco Park

2. Check Out Hurulu Eco-Park

While it may not carry the same level of fame as its neighbors Kaudalla and Minneriya National Parks, Hurulu Eco-Park holds its own as a vital part of the ecological corridor that these reserves share, especially for the Asian elephant populations that roam freely across these territories.

Hurulu Eco-Park is part of the Hurulu Forest Reserve which has been designated as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO.

One of the park’s most captivating aspects is the opportunity it offers to witness large gatherings of elephants!

In fact, during certain times of the year, Hurulu Eco-Park can see even larger congregations of these magnificent creatures than Kaudalla or Minneriya, making it a hidden gem for those hoping to observe elephants in their natural habitat. The elephants are drawn to the park’s reservoir and natural waterholes, especially during the dry season.

3. Meditate at Sri Bhodiraja Aranya Senasanaya

Sri Bhodiraja Aranya Senasanaya in Hiriwadunna offers a deeply spiritual experience steeped in the rich history of Buddhism (specifically Theravada) that permeates Sri Lanka.

This serene monastery is closely linked to the revered Sri Maha Bodhi tree in Anuradhapura, believed to have grown from a sapling of the original Bodhi tree under which Siddhartha Gautama, who became Lord Buddha, attained enlightenment

The name “Bodhiraja,” translating to “King of Bodhi Trees,” underscores the profound significance of this site in the Buddhist world. Deriving its name from “Siri Weda Unna” meaning “the place of great knowledge,” it is enveloped in a calm that transcends the ordinary.

Habarana Elephant

4. Spot Some Elephants

You know what’s casually awesome about Habarana? You could be cruising down the road, and boom, there’s an elephant just ambling across like it’s no big deal. Yeah, in Habarana, spotting elephants isn’t just something you tick off your safari list; it’s part of the everyday scenery.

The elephant god, Ganesha, makes quite the appearance too. Statues of Ganesha are pretty common around here, sitting proudly outside shops, temples, and even tucked away in nooks along the roads. I found that it’s quite common to see Ganesha in countries with a significant elephant population such as Thailand. It’s a rare chance to see religious sycretism in action between Hinduism and Buddhism.

So, when you’re here, keep your eyes peeled. Whether you’re heading out early in the morning or cruising back from a day of exploring, there’s always a chance of an elephant encounter. Just imagine telling your friends back home, “Yeah, had to stop the car today, an elephant was crossing the road.” Only in Habarana, right?

Kottu Roti

5. Eat Kottu Roti

Oh, and let’s talk about the culinary adventure waiting for you in Habarana, particularly one dish that’s a game-changer – Kottu Roti. It’s a dish that has been recommended to me by some locals while I was hiking Pidurangala Rock.

If you haven’t had the pleasure yet, prepare for a flavor bomb that’s as fun to eat as it is to watch being made. It’s flatbread with veggies, spices, and your choice of meat or seafood, all on a flat grill.

Each bite is a mix of textures and flavors, perfectly capturing the essence of Sri Lankan street food. And in Habarana, you’re in the perfect spot to try some of the best Kottu Roti around. I recommend checking out Roti Cafe, you won’t go wrong!

Dambulla Things to Do

6. Visit the Dambulla Cave Temples

Now, no trip to Habarana would be complete without making the short journey to one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic sites – the Dambulla Cave Temples

Just a hop, skip, and a jump away, these ancient caves are a feast for the eyes and the soul. You’ll get to walk into a massive rock that houses over 150 Buddha statues and paintings that have been there for over 2,000 years. Yeah, it’s that cool.

The walls and ceilings are covered in murals that tell stories of Buddha and his teachings, each more vibrant than the last. And then there’s the atmosphere – peaceful, reverent, and just a tad mystical. It’s like stepping into another world, one where time stands still, and all that matters is the here and now.

But here’s a pro tip: wear comfy shoes because there’s a bit of a climb to get to the caves, and don’t forget to bring a cover-up since you’re entering a sacred space. If you’re keen on joining a tour, here’s a highly-rated tour you can join.

Sigiriya or Lion's Rock in Sri Lanka

7. Hike Sigiriya Lion Rock

Alright, let’s talk about one of the absolute must-dos if you’re situated in Habarana – hiking up the Lion Rock in Sigiriya.

Sometimes hailed as the Eight Wonder of the World, the climb up can be a bit of a workout, but every step is worth it. You’re literally walking up the side of a fortress that’s been around since the 5th century. How cool is that?

As you make your way up, you’ll pass by frescoes painted thousands of years ago, still vibrant and alive, telling tales of a bygone era. And then there’s the Mirror Wall. Back in the day, it was so polished that the king could see his reflection in it. Now, it’s covered with inscriptions from visitors of the past.

The real kicker comes when you reach the top. The views up there are nothing short of epic – we’re talking 360-degree vistas of the surrounding jungle and countryside. It’s the kind of spot that makes you want to take a deep breath and soak it all in. And for a moment, you can almost imagine what it was like to live in a palace in the sky.

Monkey on Pidurangala Rock

8. Catch the Sunset at Pidurangala Rock

Oh, and just when you thought the day couldn’t get any better after conquering Sigiriya Lion Rock, there’s one more thing you’ve gotta do – catch the sunset at Pidurangala Rock

A less crowded, more rugged cousin to Sigiriya, offering arguably the best seat in the house for sunset views that’ll make your heart skip a beat.

The hike up Piduranga is a bit of an adventure itself. It’s a bit more challenging than Sigiriya due to its more natural state but still has its moments, especially the last bit where you’re scrambling over rocks. At the top, you’re greeted with this panoramic view of the countryside, with Sigiriya Rock standing majestically in the distance.

The view from Pidurangala lets you see Sigiriya in a new light, quite literally, with the setting sun casting shadows that turn the landscape into something out of a dream.

Minneriya Safari Tours

9. Go on a Safari at Minneriya National Park

Now, if you’re in Habarana and you skip out on a safari at Minneriya National Park, you’re missing out big time. True, it’s already got Huluru but Minneriya offers a different experience altogether.

The park is a wildlife party and everyone’s invited. But the guests of honor? As always, it’s gotta be the elephants.

During “The Gathering” from July to September, we’re talking about hundreds of these magnificent creatures converging around the Minneriya tank. It’s not just any gathering too; it’s the largest assembly of wild Asian elephants in the world.

But hey, it’s not just about the elephants. Minneriya is a hotspot for spotting all kinds of wildlife. From deer prancing around to monkeys swinging through the trees and if you’re lucky, maybe even a leopard lounging in the sun. And the birdlife? Absolutely stellar. Bring your binoculars because you’re going to want to catch every colorful detail.

You can join an affordable and highly-rated safari at Minneriya through here.

Thivanka Image House

10. Cycle at Polonnaruwa

After you’ve had your fill of wildlife and breathtaking sunsets around Habarana, why not switch gears and pedal back in time at Polonnaruwa? Yeah, you heard that right – cycling through the ancient city of Polonnaruwa!

Polonnaruwa, a stone’s throw from Habarana, is a sprawling ancient city that once stood as the thriving capital of Sri Lanka. And the best part? It’s perfectly laid out for exploring on two wheels. You’ll get to cycle along paths that meander through ruins of royal palaces, sacred temples, and massive stupas. It’s not every day you get to ride through a UNESCO World Heritage site, right?

The flat terrain and well-maintained trails make it easy to navigate between the sites. Plus, there’s something incredibly freeing about biking in the open air, taking in the sights at your own pace. If you’re keen on going with a guide, you can join a guided cycling tour here.

Shirodhara in Ayurveda

11. Experience an Ayurvedic Massage

Now, after all that cycling and hiking, your muscles might be shouting for a break. What’s the solution? Dive into the ancient world of Ayurveda with a truly authentic Ayurvedic massage, right here in Habarana.

You’ll often find yourself in a tranquil mud-hut, the air filled with the subtle scent of medicinal herbs. An expert therapist is ready to guide you through an experience that’s about to relax, rejuvenate, and revitalize your body, mind, and spirit.

Ayurvedic massages aren’t just about working out those knots in your muscles; they’re a holistic ritual that balances your doshas (body energies), detoxifies your body, and boosts your wellbeing. It’s one of the best experiences I had while I was staying in Habarana.

Where to Stay in Habarana

Habarana is one of the best places to make a base when exploring the Cultural Triangle. It’s where I stayed during my whole stay in Sri Lanka and I was able to visit all the other sites on this list with ease.

Returning to a peaceful and idyllic atmosphere at the end of each day was what I just needed to unwind and recharge for the next day.

Here are some of the best places to stay in Habarana:

Best Hotels in Habarana:

  • Habarana New Star Homestay –  this is my most heartfelt recommendation. I stayed here during the economic crisis in Sri Lanka around 2021 but I still felt at home despite the nation-wide blackouts. This is a homestay and it’s a great way to experience staying with a Sri Lankan family while still having your own space. Lasantha, the owner, will be able to help you with anything you need. He was even my tuk-tuk driver and took me to Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, and other places. The food prepared by his wife every night was amazing with traditional Sri Lankan flavors. The rooms were peaceful though the air-conditioned rooms cost extra.

  • Levona Garden Resort – offers a tranquil stay close to natural attractions. The resort features an on-site restaurant where you can enjoy delicious meals. Accommodations at the resort are designed for comfort and convenience, with all rooms air-conditioned and equipped with flat-screen TVs with satellite channels for entertainment. To ensure guests have a hassle-free stay, Levona Garden Resort provides a 24-hour front desk service.

  • Wild Hut Habarana – a charming bed and breakfast that offers a tranquil garden setting and comfortable accommodations. You can enjoy the convenience of free private parking, round-the-clock front desk assistance, and complimentary WiFi. Best Hostels in Habarana:

How to Get Around Habarana

How to Get Around Habarana

Whether you’re here to check out ancient ruins, go on wildlife safaris, or just soak in the natural beauty, there’s an easy way to get wherever you need to go: Tuk-Tuks

These three-wheelers are the backbone of local transport in Sri Lanka. They’re everywhere and perfect for short hops around town or to nearby attractions. Negotiating the fare before you hop in is part of the experience, so don’t be shy.

Best Time to Visit Habarana

Habarana shines the brightest during two main periods: from January to March and again from June to September.

During January to March, you’re looking at sunny days with temperatures hovering around 27°C (80°F) to 31°C (88°F). It’s the kind of weather that’s perfect for exploring—whether that means trekking up to ancient fortresses, cycling through the lush countryside, or just meandering around the local markets and sites. Plus, the evenings are cool and pleasant.

Then there’s June to September, another great window to visit, especially if elephants are on your must-see list. August, in particular, is when the famous “The Gathering” happens at Minneriya National Park. Temperatures around this time are similar to the earlier months, but with a bit more humidity in the air, which can make it feel warmer. The rainfall is sporadic, often coming in short bursts that can actually be quite refreshing.
