Nami Island, also known as Namiseom or Naminara Republic, is a tiny half-moon-shaped island located just a short trip away from Seoul.

Tucked away in the curves of the majestic Han River, an oasis that beckons with promises of tranquility and beauty.

But does it deliver? You bet.

Beyond the scenic views, Nami Island bursts with activities. From cycling past rows of towering trees or taking in the local art and music, there’s something for everyone.

With every step, you’ll uncover a new facet of the island, ensuring no two visits are the same. It’s about immersing yourself in an environment that feels worlds away, even though it’s just a short journey from the city.

Explore, enjoy, and let Nami Island surprise you.

Origin of Nami Island

Nami Island is named after General Nami, a notable figure in Korean history. Born to a noble family, General Nami was a young commander who served during the reign of King Sejo, the seventh king of the Joseon Dynasty.

He was wrongly accused of treason and executed.

Later, his name was cleared and posthumously exonerated, and he was given the title of “Horyeong”, a person who is posthumously promoted by three ranks.

The island’s connection to General Nami is somewhat symbolic. While it’s believed that his grave was not on the island, a tombstone was erected there in his honor during the 1970s.

History of Nami Island

The island was formed as a result of the construction of the Cheongpyeong Dam in 1944. The damming of the waters led to the creation of this island in the middle of the Han River.

The initial development of the island for tourism started in the 1960s. Over the years, it has been cultivated and nurtured to be an eco-friendly leisure spot, preserving its natural beauty and forests.

The real boom in Nami Island’s popularity came after its landscapes served as the backdrop for the South Korean drama “Winter Sonata” in the early 2000s. This drama was a massive hit in South Korea and in many other Asian countries. Fans flocked to Nami Island to see the shooting locations and re-live the moments from the series.

After the drama’s success, Nami Island became synonymous with romance and has since been a sought-after location for couples. So in some ways, you can still get a bit of Korean culture when you visit the island.

In a quirky marketing move, Nami Island declared itself the “Naminara Republic” in 2006. This self-proclaimed micronation has its own passport, currency, and even a national flag. While it’s more of a conceptual branding strategy, it does add a unique charm to the visitor experience.

Is Nami Island Worth It?

Absolutely, its proximity to Seoul makes Nami Island an accessible and very fun day trip.

While it’s not as big as Jeju Island, nature lovers will find a haven in Nami’s splendid four seasons. From the golden hues of autumn to snow-draped landscapes in winter, the island continuously rejuvenates its scenic beauty. The meticulously maintained gardens, encounters with wildlife, and riverside paths offers a serene escape from the city.

Yet, the island’s popularity is a double-edged sword. Weekends and holidays can often see it absolutely swarming, which some might find detracts from its charm. That’s not to say that you won’t be able to find space for yourself, though these days the main spots will definitely have some crowds so I suggest going really early if photographs are what you’re after.

Still, if you’re a fan of the classic K-dramas or are just looking for a day to spend in nature it’s definitely worth it.

Top Things to Do on Nami Island

Nami Island Seoul Day Trip

1. Walk Through the Metasequoia Lane

The Metasequoia Lane is one of the most recognized and photographed spots on Nami Island, and for good reason. Metasequoias, also known as Dawn Redwoods, are tall, deciduous trees native to the Sichuan-Hubei region in China. They create a beautiful canopy overhead, making any walk down this lane feel almost otherworldly.

The Metasequoia trees on Nami Island were planted during the 1970s and have since become a monumental feature. The straight pathway, flanked on both sides by these towering trees, is bound to give you a sense of being cocooned in nature.

2. Dodamsambong Garden

The Dodamsambong Garden. Drawing inspiration from the famed Dodamsambong Peaks in Danyang, this garden beautifully captures the essence of the three distinct peaks.

Dodamsambong, in its original context, symbolizes a couple and a third figure — often portrayed as an ex-lover. This tale of love, jealousy, and nature is masterfully represented within the garden’s layout.

Gingko in Nami

3. Ginkgo Tree Lane

Another of Nami Island’s splendid nature offerings is the Ginkgo Tree Lane. As you step onto this pathway, you’re immediately surrounded by towering ginkgo trees!

These ancient trees, known for their longevity and resilience, have been a part of the island’s landscape for many years and stand as silent witnesses to countless seasons.

During autumn, the ginkgo leaves change their hue from a fresh green to a radiant yellow, carpeting the ground with a shimmering blanket.

4. First Kiss Spot

One of the more romantic locations on Nami Island, the “First Kiss Spot” has a backstory that tugs at the heartstrings of K-drama fans. It’s where the Winter Sonata’s protagonists, Jun-sang and Yu-jin, shared their memorable first kiss.

5. Gongsaengwon Garden (Winter Sonata Statue)

This Winter Sonata bronze statue tribute captures the likenesses of the lead characters, Jun-sang and Yu-jin, played by actors Bae Yong-joon and Choi Ji-woo respectively. The drama which aired in 2002 helped in kickstarting the Hallyu or Korean Wave phenomenon.

6. Nami Picture Book Library

The Picture Book Library is filled with books, mostly for kids, but hey, who doesn’t enjoy flipping through a colorful picture book every now and then? And if you head upstairs, they’ve got an “International Children’s Library” section with books in English.

Perfect if Korean isn’t your first language.

What’s really amazing about this place is its design. They’ve got chairs made out of old magazines, and everything’s set up so kids can easily grab books. Plus, there are spots to play and interact.

One of the best parts? The views. Every window in this place gives you a snapshot of Nami Island. So you get to enjoy some good reads with some killer sights.

7. Mother and Child Statue

The Mother and Child Statue is certainly one of the more bizarre statues that I have seen on the island. It draws the eyes with its very strange proportions. I suppose that’s art after all! Maybe you can tell me what you make of it once you see it for yourself.

8. General Nami's Tomb

A bit off the beaten path, but it is worth visiting General Nami’s tomb, the namesake of the island itself.

The tomb itself is rather unassuming, a modest mound surrounded by a stone fence. A few steps away, an information board will also provide some more history on General Nami aside from the ones already written here.

9. UNICEF Charity Train

The UNICEF Charity Train on Nami Island serves as a pleasant mode of transportation. The electric-powered train traverses through key scenic spots, and is a convenient way to get around.

A part of the proceeds from every ticket sale is donated to UNICEF, aiming to assist in various child welfare projects around the world. Ride for a cause!

10. Forest Adventure TreeGo

The Forest Adventure Treego is a popular outdoor activity space on Nami Island, known for its high ropes course. It offers a unique opportunity to traverse through treetops, tackle various obstacles, and enjoy zip-lining.

The courses are designed for both adults and children!

11. Maple Tree Lane

One of the most iconic areas, that’s lined with beautiful maple trees. In the fall, the lane becomes especially popular as the leaves turn into the brilliant hues of fire.

You can feel the crispness in the air, hearing the rustle of the leaves underfoot, and taking in the breathtaking contrast of the vivid foliage against the clear blue sky.

12. Bike Around the Island

Biking around Nami Island is one of the best ways to explore its expansive beauty at your own pace. The flat terrain and well-maintained pathways make it an ideal location.

You can rent bicycles from the many rental stations available. There are a variety of options to choose from, including single bikes, tandem bikes for couples, and even family bikes which can accommodate up to four people!

Along the way, there are multiple rest areas and cafes where you can take a break, grab a drink, or simply enjoy the surroundings.

13. Spot Some Animals

A walk around Nami Island is a delightful chance to spot a variety of animals!

Don’t be surprised if you come across the playful squirrels darting from one tree to another. These furry inhabitants are quite used to the presence of humans. Not to mention the rabbits as well!

The sight of majestic peacocks roaming freely can also be quite enchanting. I’ve seen plenty just walking around and up on the roofs.

The lakes and ponds of Nami Island are also teeming with life. On a quiet day, you can spot ducks and geese gliding gracefully on the water surface.

And strangely enough, you can even find some Ostrich on the island which I’m not so sure how to feel about that.

How to Get Around Nami Island

Navigating Nami Island is a delightful experience in itself, offering various modes of transportation that cater to different preferences, be it leisurely exploration or a quicker, more efficient journey. Here’s a guide to help you choose the best way to get around the island:

  • On Foot: The most intimate way to experience Nami Island is undoubtedly by walking. The well-maintained pathways, interspersed with artistic installations and beautiful landscapes, make strolling around a pleasure.

  • Bicycles: As mentioned, renting a bicycle is another excellent option. The island has a dedicated bicycle rental station. The flat terrains and clear signages make cycling both easy and enjoyable.

  • Electric Tri-way: These are electric scooters designed for a single rider and are an eco-friendly way to zoom around the island. They’re perfect for those who prefer not to walk or cycle but still want to explore the island independently.

  • Mini Train: For a more relaxed and informative tour, the mini train offers a guided ride around the island. While it covers the main attractions, the commentary provides interesting tidbits about Nami Island’s history and culture.

Best Time to Visit Nami Island

Visiting Nami Island is a delightful experience year-round, with each season offering its own unique charm. However, choosing the best time to go depends on the kind of experience you’re looking for (and it never hurts to get travel insurance no matter when you’re going.) Here’s a breakdown of what to expect during each season:

  • Spring (March to May): This is arguably one of the most beautiful times to visit Nami Island. The blossoming cherry trees create a picturesque backdrop, with petals fluttering down like snowflakes. The weather is mild and pleasant, and the island is adorned with a vibrant array of flowers, making it a favorite for many. This period, especially during the peak cherry blossom time, can get crowded, so if you prefer fewer tourists, plan your visit during the weekdays.

  • Summer (June to August): As the temperatures rise, Nami Island transforms into a lush, green paradise. It’s the perfect time for picnics by the river and leisurely boat rides. The dense foliage provides shade for walking or cycling, making the heat more bearable.

  • Autumn (September to November): Autumn on Nami Island is nothing short of magical. The fiery reds, oranges, and yellows of the fall foliage, especially the striking gingko and maple trees, create an enchanting atmosphere. Given its popularity during this season, it’s advisable to arrive early to avoid the midday crowds.

  • Winter (December to February): Winter blankets Nami Island in a pristine layer of snow, giving it a serene beauty. It’s a wonderland for those who enjoy the chill in the air and the crunch of snow underfoot. You’ll get the full “Winter Sonata” experience.

How to Get to Nami Island

Getting to Nami Island is a straightforward process, though it requires a combination of transportation modes. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to reach this picturesque destination:

1. Traveling from Seoul to Gapyeong Station:

  • By Train: The most common method is to take a train from Seoul to Gapyeong Station.
    • Subway: Use the Seoul Subway’s Gyeongchun Line. Board a train heading towards Chuncheon and alight at Gapyeong Station. The journey takes about 60-75 minutes from Cheongnyangni Station in Seoul.
    • ITX (Intercity Train Express): This is a faster option than the regular subway. Board the ITX-Chuncheon Train from Yongsan, Cheongnyangni, or Sangbong Station and get off at Gapyeong Station.

2. From Gapyeong Station to Nami Island:

  • Gapyeong Tour Bus: After arriving at Gapyeong Station, you can take the Gapyeong City Tour Bus. This hop-on-hop-off bus connects major tourist spots in the area, including Nami Island. The bus comes approximately every 30 minutes.
  • Taxi: For a faster and direct route, take a taxi from Gapyeong Station to Nami Island’s ferry dock. The journey is relatively short and won’t cost much.

3. Crossing to Nami Island: Once you’ve reached the Nami Island dock, you’ll need to cross the Han River to get to the island itself, so while it’s possible to rent a car, you still have to find parking at the docks.

  • By Ferry: Regular ferry rides are available and are the most common method to reach the island. The trip takes about 5-7 minutes, and the cost of the ferry is usually included in the entrance fee to Nami Island.
  • By Zip Wire: For the more adventurous, there’s the option to zip line onto Nami Island from a tower at the dock. It provides a quick and exhilarating way to arrive!
