7 Things to Do in Emporio | The Largest Village in Santorini

Discover Emporio: from its rich history, unique architecture, and local secrets in this comprehensive travel guide to the island's largest village.

Emporio – a village brimming with authentic Grecian charm.

As the largest village of Santorini, Emporio beckons with its maze of medieval alleyways, impressive fortresses, and iconic whitewashed churches.

But there’s more to Emporio than meets the eye. Beyond its cobblestone streets, it’s a place where time seems to stand still, where the true essence of Santorini’s culture unfurls.

I spent most of my days in Emporio as it was where I was Couchsurfing at that time, there’s a certain charm to this quiet village that one can really appreciate, not to mention the all friendly cats hanging around the neighborhood.

Emporio Things to Do

What to Know About Emporio

Emporio, derived from the word “Emporion,” which means “trade” in Greek.

It is believed that the village served as a crucial trading post, connecting various parts of the island. The strategic location of the village, shielded by hills and offering an expansive view of the surrounding sea, made it a prime spot for traders in ancient times.

Archaeological findings in and around Emporio suggest human settlements that date back to the early Byzantine era. The remnants of old constructions, combined with documented historical data, paint a picture of a flourishing village, serving as a significant hub in Santorini’s complex trade network.

Top Things to Do in Emporio

Goulas Tower

1. Goulas Tower

Often referred to as the “Tower of Nimborio”, this square structure bears the marks of the Venetian Rule, likely having its origins in the 15th century.

Within the confines of the tower, a small chapel dedicated to the martyr Christodoulos – the founder of the Abbey of Patmos – can be found. A strategic tunnel, now a significant feature of the tower, once connected this fortification to the neighboring “Kasteli”, another significant historical structure in Emporio.

Historical records suggest that Goulas dates back to the 15th century, meaning it would have been erected when the neighboring Kasteli was already taking shape.

Beyond its strategic military importance, the tower played a vital role in the local agrarian economy. It likely served as a storage facility for agricultural produce, offering protection to the cultivators from the frequent and dreaded pirate invasions.

With the decline of piracy post the 17th century, the Goulas Tower transitioned into a religious realm, becoming a part of the monastery of Agios Ioannis Theologos of Patmos, with monks taking residence within its walls.

2. Kasteli Of Emporio

The Castle of Emporio’s primary role was to provide a safe haven for its residents and shield their trade from the rampant pirate incursions that frequented the Cyclades.

Strategically erected in the mid-15th century, the Kasteli was a bastion of defense. The houses, constructed adjacently within its protective walls, were interconnected through a series of bridges.

The design of the Kasteli closely resembled a labyrinth, with its confounding narrow alleyways that permitted only one person’s passage at a time. This maze-like structure is further emphasized by the presence of myriad archways, diminutive windows, staircases, and doorways.

For heightened security, the Kasteli was equipped with a sole entrance, a feature that still stands to this day.

Panagia Mesani Church

3. Panagia Mesani Church

The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary is also known as Panagia Evangelistria. This church is a modern addition to the Santorini’s spiritual landscape, having been constructed in 1980.

Its rectangular design is punctuated by a distinct bell tower positioned at its south-western corner, which comes complete with a clock. You can’t miss it as it’s one of the landmarks that stands out as you approach Emporio from the bus stop.

A spacious courtyard precedes the entrance to the church, with a wide staircase leading the way. Below these stairs, a quaint park provides benches for relaxation.

Next to this serene spot, a small amphitheater and a children’s playground can be found.

Agios Nikolaos Marmarites

4. Agios Nikolaos Marmaritis

The Agios Nikolaos Marmaritis Church, unlike any other monument, is preserved up to its roof.

Its distinct roof is comprised of marble slabs and finds support from three solid marble posts within the church. The entrance is uniquely situated on the south side of the structure.

But what truly stands out in this edifice is a niche found inside—a tomb which was once home to a statue of a goddess. This tomb is adorned with small Ionic columns that uphold a Doric architrave.

A glimpse into the past reveals an inscription etched below the niche, indicating that the temple was an offering to Thea, also known as the goddess Vasileia in Greek Mythology. This sacred space also served a dual purpose as a family tomb.

Over the course of time, the monument underwent transformation. From a temple dedicated to a goddess, it metamorphosed into a Christian church. This church was consecrated in honor of St. Nicholas and is affectionately known as “Marmarites” which translates to “made of marble.”

Windmills of Emporio

5. The Windmills of Emporio

It’s not only Mykonos or Oia that has windmills! Perched on the ridge of the Gavrilos hill lie the remnants of eight traditional 19th-century windmills.

These structures, though in varied states of conservation, remain a magnificent sight, capturing the essence of a bygone era.

They have been officially recognized as historical monuments by the Ministry of Culture since August 3, 1993. Adding to their importance, six of these windmills have been entrusted to the Municipality of Thira.

Future plans, based on a study conducted for the municipality, are quite ambitious. Two windmills are slated for restoration, with the aim of making them fully functional once again. Another is set to be transformed into a windmill museum. Yet another is envisioned to become a traditional café!

But for now, you can enjoy them as they are which is beautiful in its own way.

6. Perissa Beach

Just a short drive away from Emporio, Perissa Beach is one of the island’s most famous beaches and for good reason. Characterized by its unique black volcanic sand, it stretches for about 7 km (4.3 mi), making it one of the longest beaches on the island.

The striking contrast between the deep blue of the Aegean Sea and the dark sands is nothing short of mesmerizing.

Whether you’re in the mood for a refreshing swim, sunbathing, or simply sipping on a cocktail with the sea breeze in your hair, Perissa Beach’s got you.

7. Church of Saint Catherine

You have to hike a bit to reach this church but it’s a true hidden gem and quite worth the effort.

The Holy Church of Saint Catherine has a rich history that traces back to the 17th century. It was originally connected to Mount Sinai, serving as one of the sacred dependencies of the Holy Monastery of Theovadistos of Mount Sinai.

By 1714, the Sinai Fathers decided to sell both the church’s estate and the church itself, marking a significant shift as they departed from Santorini. Like many structures on the island, the church wasn’t spared from natural calamities. It suffered extensive damage during the earthquake of 1956.

Fortunately, the residents of Emporio took it upon themselves to repair the church. This spirit of renovation continued into the 21st century, with significant restoration efforts commencing in 2009.

By July 2018, a comprehensive restoration process began, culminating in its completion a year later, thanks to the collective efforts of Emporio’s residents and the generous assistance from Athanasios Martinos, the Civil Governor of Mount Athos.
