Surrounded by shimmering blue waters and fringed with pristine beaches, Aoshima Island is most famous for its geological marvel, the “Devil’s Washboard,” and its sacred Shinto shrine hidden within lush subtropical greenery.

Let this travel guide take you on a journey to uncover the wonders of Aoshima, from how to get there to the must-see attractions that make it an unforgettable experience.

History of Aoshima Island

Aoshima Island’s story begins with its unique geological formation, shaped over millions of years by the relentless forces of the sea. The island’s most iconic feature, the Devil’s Washboard, is a series of ridged sandstone and shale formations that stretch along its shores.

The island is home to Aoshima Shrine, a revered Shinto site dedicated to the deities Hikohohodemi-no-Mikoto and Toyotama-hime, who are associated with marriage and love in Japanese mythology. These deities symbolize the harmonious union of land and sea, a connection that resonates deeply with the island’s serene environment. Pilgrimages to Aoshima Shrine date back as far as the Heian Period, when the island’s sacred status drew worshippers seeking blessings.

How to Get to Aoshima Island

By train, the JR Nichinan Line offers a direct route to Aoshima Station from Miyazaki City. The journey takes about 30 minutes, and the station is just a short walk from the island. This scenic train ride along the coastline provides beautiful views of the ocean, setting the tone for your visit.

Traveling by car is another popular option. Aoshima is about a 20-minute drive from Miyazaki City along Route 220, which offers a picturesque drive with stunning coastal views. Parking is available near the island for those arriving by car.

For those using public transportation, local buses also connect Miyazaki City to Aoshima. The bus ride takes slightly longer than the train but is a convenient and cost-effective choice for visitors.

Once you arrive, a short pedestrian bridge links the mainland to the island, offering a pleasant walk with panoramic views of the surrounding ocean and the Devil’s Washboard formations.

The view is especially stunning at sunrise and sunset, when the sky is painted with vibrant hues and the tranquil waters reflect the colors of the horizon.

Aoshima Shrine

4. Visit Aoshima Shrine

Aoshima Shrine, nestled within the lush subtropical forest at the heart of Aoshima Island, is one of Miyazaki’s most revered Shinto sites. Known for its vibrant vermilion torii gates, the shrine is dedicated to the deities Hikohohodemi-no-Mikoto and Toyotama-hime, who represent love, marriage, and the harmony of land and sea.

The shrine holds a special place in Japanese mythology, as it is tied to the legend of these deities and their divine union. This connection has made Aoshima Shrine a popular destination for couples seeking blessings for a harmonious relationship, as well as individuals praying for good fortune in love.

At the main shrine, you can participate in traditional rituals such as ringing the bell and writing wishes on ema (wooden prayer plaques). The shrine also offers unique talismans (omamori) related to love and happiness, which make for meaningful souvenirs.

Aoshima Devil's Washboard

5. Admire The Devil's Washboard

The Devil’s Washboard (Oni no Sentakuita) is one of Aoshima Island’s most iconic natural wonders and the must-see attraction. This unique geological formation consists of long, parallel ridges of sandstone and shale that stretch out into the sea, resembling the grooves of an old-fashioned washboard. It is a stunning example of nature’s artistry, formed over millions of years through the combined forces of wave erosion and sediment deposition.

The Devil’s Washboard encircles much of Aoshima Island and is most visible during low tide, when the water recedes to reveal the intricate patterns of these rock formations. You can even walk along the ridges during low tide, marveling at the symmetrical beauty of the grooves and the way they interact with the waves and light. It’s a paradise for photographers, as the formations create striking compositions, especially at sunrise and sunset.

6. Drop by the Legend of Hyuga Hall

The Legend of Hyuga Hall is situated within Aoshima Shrine. This museum presents a series of twelve meticulously crafted wax dioramas that illustrate the Hyuga myth cycle, which traces the divine ancestry of Japan’s emperors.

The exhibits narrate key episodes from Japanese mythology, such as the story of the sun goddess Amaterasu sending her grandson, Ninigi, to rule the earth, granting him the three sacred treasures—a sword, a mirror, and a jewel—symbolizing divine authority and forming the Imperial Regalia of Japan. The museum also explores Ninigi’s encounter and marriage to Princess Konohanasakuya and the birth of their children, including Yamasachi-hiko and Umisachi-hiko.

It also delves into the adventures of Yamasachi-hiko, his journey to the palace of the sea god Wadatsumi, his marriage to Princess Toyotama, and the birth of their son, Ugayafukiaezu. The narrative concludes with Ugayafukiaezu’s son, Emperor Jimmu, the first emperor of Japan, who established a government in what is now Nara.

The Aoshima Lighthouse can be missed if you’re not the exploring type. It’s actually located at the back of the island. This small lighthouse stands as a silent guardian overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

While the lighthouse itself is not grand in size or design, its simplicity harmonizes beautifully with the surrounding landscape.

Although the Aoshima Lighthouse is not open to the public for interior exploration, its scenic location and tranquil surroundings make it a must-visit spot for those exploring the island.
