As the centuries unfolded, Chrissi’s importance oscillated. During the Minoan era, it served as a hub for the obsidian trade, a volcanic glass used to make sharp-edged tools and weapons.
In Roman times, Chrissi became known for its rich shell beds, particularly the Pinna, a large bivalve shell, which was used to produce the highly prized “byssus” or sea silk.

Chrissi Island’s isolation from urban lights reveals a breathtaking celestial show come nighttime.
While officially, overnighting on the island isn’t allowed, some adventurous souls find themselves “accidentally” missing the last boat back. I know we did.
This unique experience of sleeping beneath a canvas of stars in one of the Mediterranean’s untouched paradises is simply unparalleled and remains as one of my most treasured memories in Greece.
If you find yourself in this situation, always respect the island’s regulations. But if it happens, hey, just make the best of out of this starlit adventure.
We saw shooting stars and even fireworks at the horizon and the sunrise was another cherry on top.
2. Go Swimming & Snorkeling

Respect Nature’s Treasures: Rocks, shells, or ancient remains are natural artifacts that belong to the island and must be left undisturbed for future generations to appreciate.
No Overnight Stays: To maintain the tranquility of the island’s ecosystem, visitors are “technically” not allowed to stay overnight. More on this later.
Keep the Fire Away: Lighting fires is not only dangerous but can also have devastating effects on the island’s unique flora and fauna. Smoking near plants can also cause fires. If you must smoke, please do so in designated areas, ensuring that all cigarette butts are properly disposed of.
Vehicle-Free Zone: To preserve the natural state of Chrissi, vehicles of any kind are not allowed.
Stay on the Path: Avoid wandering off the beaten tracks.
Leave No Trace: We all have a part to play in preserving the beauty of Chrissi Island. Ensure that you do not leave any trash behind.

Best Beaches on Chrissi Island
1. Golden Beach
Also known as Belegrina or Chrissi Ammos, Golden Beach is the shimmering gem of Chrissi Island.
Situated closest to the pier, it’s the first sight that greets most visitors, with many choosing to linger on its pristine shores until their departure.
It offers the conveniences of an organized beach complete with sunbeds and a lively beach bar. But for those who prefer a quieter experience, there’s still ample space to lay down a towel and immerse in the sand’s unique golden-pink hue, a result of the thousands of crushed shells.
It’s this combination of natural beauty and amenities that makes Golden Beach the most frequented spot on the island, especially given its easy accessibility from the harbor.
2. Chatzivolakas Beach
More subdued than Golden Beach, Chatzivolakas boasts of gentler waves and an extended canopy of cedar trees that grant a reprieve from the blazing sun. You can find it just west of Belegrina.
This area encapsulates the quintessential desert-island ambiance many daydream about. To enhance the experience, you have the chance to explore the nearby ancient lighthouse, a historic salt lake, and the sole dwelling on the island.
The absence of sunbeds here truly evokes a tropical desert island vibe.
3. Mati Beach
Mati Beach, also referred to as Vogiou Mati, is situated on the southern coast of Chrissi Island, serving as the primary docking point for boats.
Close to the arrival area, you can find a taverna for a chance to savor local dishes.
Just west of the pier, a picturesque bay unfolds, revealing intriguing sea caves awaiting exploration. These hidden gems, along with secluded coves, house pristine waters that are perfect for snorkeling and other underwater activities.
For those preferring a quieter spot, the eastern side of the pier offers a rocky shoreline.
While it might not have the soft sands of other beaches, the waters here are typically calm, especially when Belegrina beach faces choppier conditions.
4. Avlaki Beach
Avlaki Beach, positioned towards the western extremity of Chrissi Island, is a hidden gem that showcases the island’s rich history.
As one departs from Chatzivolakas and meanders westward, remnants of an ancient Minoan settlement serve as a reminder of the island’s past.
Upon reaching Avlaki Beach, you’ll be greeted with a more secluded atmosphere compared to other beaches on the island, making it an ideal spot for if you’re seeking serenity.
5. Kendra Beach
Kendra Beach, located at western tip of Chrissi Island, is a stark departure from the typical sandy havens the island is known for.
This rugged coastline, characterized by its craggy terrain and vast sea caves, provides a wild and unspoiled landscape that beckons the more adventurous traveler.
As you set foot on Kendra, the vast rocky expanses stretch out, offering countless opportunities to explore sea pools, crevices, and natural formations.
While the area is known for its gusty winds, the arresting sea pools, reflecting the sky and surrounded by rocks, create mesmerizing scenes that are a delight to behold.
Unlike other beaches on Chrissi, Kendra isn’t one for leisurely sunbathing. Its allure lies in its wild, untamed beauty.
6. Kataprosopo Beach
Kataprosopo Beach, a tranquil and somewhat hidden gem on Chrissi Island. Its defining feature is a strip of rocks that bisects the bay, forming a series of captivating shallow pools.
Directly across from Kataprosopo Beach lies the islet of Mikronisi, which translates to “small island” in Greek. This tiny speck in the vast sea is a haven for countless bird species.
A short walk from its shores brings you to Kefala Hill, the island’s highest vantage point, rising a modest 31 m (101 ft) above sea level. While it may not be a towering peak, the panoramic views from its summit are truly unparalleled.
7. Vages Beach
Vages Beach, tucked away on the southern flank of Chrissi Island, largely free from the bustle of large crowds.
However, its seclusion does come with its own set of characteristics. The beach often bears the brunt of the southern winds, making the atmosphere a tad more invigorating.
The landscape here is distinct, marked by a rocky seabed interspersed with a myriad of shells and pebbles. These features add to the beach’s charm, but they also necessitate some caution for those planning to take a dip.
Make sure you have some swim shoes to avoid getting hurt.

Best Time to Visit Chrissi Island
The best time to visit Chrissi Island is during the shoulder season (May-June & September-October). During these months, you’ll enjoy moderate temperatures ideal for beach activities.
You’ll have the island all to yourself compared to peak summer. Moreover, the sea remains warm enough for swimming, especially in June and September.
The natural landscape, particularly the flora, is at its most picturesque in May and June.
How to Get to Chrissi Island
The primary departure point to Chrissi Island is Ierapetra. Boats leave daily between 10:00-12:00 during tourist season. Tickets typically cost 20 EUR – 25 EUR
Boats also leave from Makrigialos and Myrtos. While pricier due to smaller, faster boats, these can offer a less crowded experience.
It’s also worth noting that a 1 EUR visitor’s tax is charged on the boat, separate from the ticket price.
Boats heading back to Ierapetra leave Chrissi Island around 16:30 or 17:30 (So expect to be stuck on the island for the next 5 hours or so), with the trip lasting under an hour.

What to Pack for Chrissi Island
Water Shoes: The island has hot pebbles and sharp rocks which can make certain areas tricky to navigate without proper footwear.
Entertainment: Given that you’ll be on the island for 3-5 hours, bring something to pass the time if you’re not planning to be active throughout. A good book, magazine, or even a portable music player can help.
Seating: While chairs and sunbeds are available, they can be costly (10 – 15 EUR) and might be fully occupied during peak times. Bringing extra towels and even a portable beach umbrella can help save costs.
Protection: Sunscreen is a must. Even with sunscreen, I still got pretty tanned.
Hydration: Carry enough water and some snacks. While there are places to buy refreshments, prices can be higher than average. For instance, a beer might cost you 3 EUR, and cocktails can be even pricier.
First Aid: While there’s a kiosk selling antiseptic cream and plasters, it’s always good to have a small first-aid kit, the corals can be quite sharp and there are many stories of people getting cut.
