Before You Visit Gili Trawangan
- Learn from my mistakes, check the weather especially if there are typhoons or wave warnings as my stay got cut a bit short because of that
- There are only a few ATMs on the island, so it’s recommended to carry extra cash.
- Motorized vehicles are not allowed on any of the three Gili islands so the only ways to get around are by foot or bicycle.
- Try to avoid using “cidomos” (horse carts) as the animals are often mistreated.
- Travel light when visiting the Gili Islands
- Try to stay closer to the jetty for easier transportation if you have plenty of luggage
How to Get to Gili Trawangan from Bali
1. Fast Boat
Fast boats are the most popular way to get to Gili Trawangan from Bali. The boat ride takes around 1.5-2.5 hours depending on the weather and sea conditions. Fast boat services operate from Bali’s major tourist areas including Sanur, Serangan, and Padang Bai. You can usually find tour operators offering a transfer from your accomodation to any of the three ports that’s inclusive with the ferry ticket price. For Fast Boats, you can book through 12Go for the cheapest price.
Fast Boat Schedule
- Padang Bai to Gili Trawangan: In the morning between 9:00am and 10:00am. The trip takes around 1.5 hours. This is where we went to from Ubud.
- Sanur to Gili Trawangan: Departures are usually in the morning between 8:30am and 9:30am. The trip takes around 2.5 hours.
- Serangan to Gili Trawangan: Usually in the morning between 8:00am and 9:30am. The trip takes around 2 hours.
Cost: Prices vary depending on the operator, but you can expect to pay between 300,000-600,000 IDR (20-40 USD) for a one-way ticket.
2. Public Ferry
Another option is to take a ferry from Bali to Lombok and then take a local boat from Lombok to Gili Trawangan. Do note that although this is cheaper, it more than doubles your travel time. This is what I had to end up doing except it was the other way around on the way back due to unforeseen circumstances.
Public Ferry Schedule
- Padang Bai to Lombok: Departures are usually several times a day, with the first departure in the morning at around 8:00am. The trip takes around 4-5 hours, from Lombok you will then have to take a local boat to Gili Trawangan.
Cost: 40,000-50,000 IDR (3-4 USD) per person
Local Boat Schedule
- Lombok to Gili Trawangan: Local boats depart from Bangsal Harbor, located northwest of Lombok, which is where you will end up in when taking the public ferry. The boats operate on a frequent basis, usually from 7:00am to 5:00pm. The local boat ride from Lombok to Gili Trawangan takes around 20-30 minutes.
Cost: 10,000-15,000 IDR (1 USD ) per person
Total Cost: 50,000-65,000 IDR (4-6 USD) per person, one way
3. Private Transfer
If you prefer a more comfortable and hassle-free journey, you can also arrange a private transfer from Bali to Gili Trawangan. Private transfers usually include hotel pick-up and drop-off, and a private car or van to take you to the port where you will board a private speedboat to Gili Trawangan. This is of course, the most expensive option.
Cost: 1,500,000-3,500,000 IDR (100-230 USD) for a one-way transfer
Top Things to Do on Gili Trawangan
1. Go Snorkeling
Gili Trawangan is known for its crystal-clear waters and abundant marine life, making it a great destination for snorkeling. There are several tour operators on the island that offer snorkeling trips to nearby reefs, such as Turtle Point, Shark Point, and Meno Wall. You can expect to see a variety of fish, colorful corals, and even giant sea turtle!
Snorkeling equipment can usually be rented on the island, but it’s recommended to bring your own if you have it to ensure a comfortable fit.
2. Gili Trawangan Turtle Sanctuary and Hatchery
If you still haven’t had enough of turtles, make your way to the Turtle Sanctuary and Hatchery. The sanctuary is dedicated to protecting sea turtles and their eggs from predators and providing a safe environment for them to hatch.
Here you can learn about the conservation efforts and even participate in releasing baby turtles into the sea. The sanctuary is open daily, and there’s usually a small entrance fee to support the conservation efforts. It’s a great opportunity to learn about the local marine life and contribute to protecting these beautiful creatures.
3. Bike Around the Island
Biking around Gili Trawangan is probably one of the best ways to explore the island. Gili T is relatively small and has no motorized vehicles, so you can enjoy a peaceful and unobstructed ride. As I said before, it’s better to avoid the horse-pulled carriages for ethical reasons.
Bikes can be rented from several places on the island, and there are plenty of bike paths that take you through the lush greenery and along the stunning coastline. You can take your time and stop at the various beaches, cafes, and viewpoints along the way.
4. See Local Island Life
While Gili Trawangan is known for its beaches, it’s also home to a local community with a unique way of life. To get a glimpse of local island life, you have to make your way deeper into the island, away from the main tourist areas. It was an eye-opener for me as the vibe is really different. You’ll pass by traditional houses, small farms, and fishing villages, and you can observe the locals going about their daily activities. By experiencing the local culture, you can gain a better appreciation for the island and its people.
5. Scuba Diving
Gili Trawangan is also a great destination for scuba diving, with several dive sites that cater to both beginners and experienced divers. The waters around the island are home to a diverse range of marine life, including reef sharks, stingrays, octopuses, and a variety of colorful fish and corals.
There are several dive operators on the island that offer guided dives, courses, and equipment rentals. Some of the popular dive sites include Shark Point, Meno Wall, and Halik.
6. Check out the Gili Swings
The iconic swings of Gili are perched above the ocean and they offer a unique and picturesque photo opportunity, with the turquoise waters and clear blue skies as a stunning backdrop. You can find swings at several locations around the island, including some of the beachfront bars and restaurants.
The swings can get quite busy during peak hours, so it’s best to go early in the morning or later in the day to avoid the crowds.
7. Sunrise Yoga
It’s not all about sunsets in Gili T, head on to the east side and immerse yourself in the calm and peaceful atmosphere through yoga. It’s what I did a lot while I was in El Nido and really with the sound of the waves and the gentle breeze, it’s a perfect way to start your day. You can also take a morning yoga class on the beach to enhance the experience and set the tone for a relaxing and rejuvenating day on the island. Or why not try meditating on the beach? The calm of the morning can give you that amazing opportunity to tune in with your inner self.
8. Get a Balinese Massage
A great way to experience Balinese culture while on the island is to try out a Balinese massage. There are several spa and massage parlors on the island that offer various types of massages, including the traditional Balinese massage that blends stretching, acupressure, and aromatherapy.
Balinese massage is known for its therapeutic benefits, including relieving muscle tension, improving circulation, and promoting relaxation. You can choose to have your massage in a spa or in the comfort of your own accommodation. It’s a perfect way to pamper yourself and rejuvenate your body and mind.
9. Go Kayaking / SUP
Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) are some of the other water activities on Gili Trawangan. You can rent a kayak or SUP from various rental shops on the island and explore the crystal-clear waters at your own pace.
Paddling around the island is a great way to enjoy the stunning scenery and get some exercise. You can even paddle all the way to nearby islands, such as Gili Meno and Gili Air, for a day trip.
10. Enjoy the Nightlife
Gili Trawangan is most of all known for having an epic party scene, with plenty of bars, restaurants, and clubs that cater to all tastes. From beach parties, live music, and fire shows, you won’t get bored in Gili T. With your feet in the sand, dance the night away under the stars.
Some of the popular nightlife spots on the island include Sama Sama Reggae Bar, Rudy’s Pub, and of course the Jungle which is where we spent most of our nights.
Best Beaches in Gili Trawangan
12. North East Side - Villa Almarik
Villa Almarik is located just a short walk from the main jetty where boats from Bali and Lombok arrive. The beach in front of the villa is usually peaceful and spacious, providing ample room to unwind and relax. This is also the ideal spot for spotting turtles, so it’s recommended to bring your own snorkeling gear or rent it from a vendor on the beach. Compared to other beaches, there are fewer vendors here, which makes it a more tranquil environment.
13. North West Side - Sunset Beach
Sunset Beach is well-known for its stunning sunset views. While it can be crowded during sunset, the beach is a beautiful spot during the daytime with a long stretch of white sand. The swings here in particular can get really crowded too so best come prepared.
14. South East Side - Surf Point
Continuing the clockwise journey around the island, you’ll reach Surf Point, a picturesque stretch of white sand with gentle waves lapping on the shore. This beach is pristine and offers all the quintessential features of a paradise island. The beach is shaded by a variety of trees, providing ample relief from the sun, and it’s clean and well-maintained, making it an ideal place to relax.
In my opinion, the area just before and after Surf Point is the best beach section on Gili Trawangan.
15. South West Side - Malibu Beach
A beautiful stretch of white sand can be found on the southwest coast, commonly known as Malibu Beach after the opening of a beach club in the area. Although it’s located away from the bustling main strip, the beach offers plenty of options for relaxation, food, and drinks.
16. South Side - Party Beach
Just south of the jetty, there is a lively beach strip with numerous bars, restaurants, and beach chairs. This area is the social center of Gili Trawangan and attracts many party-goers who come to soak up the sun and recover from their hangovers.
Despite its party reputation, the beach itself is beautiful and has even more space to relax now that the stalls and bars have been moved further back from the sand. If you prefer a more secluded beach experience, this may not be the best choice for you.
Best Sunset Spots in Gili Trawangan
17. Gili Trawangan Lighthouse
The Gili Trawangan Lighthouse is an iconic landmark on the island and is also one of the best spots to catch the sunset. The lighthouse is located on the northern end of the island at the end of Jl. Kelapa. It offers a panoramic view of the ocean but you have to work for it as there’s a bit of a hike. You can even climb up to the top of the lighthouse for a small fee.
18. Sunset Cruise
A sunset cruise is one of the really unique ways to watch the sunset. Many tour operators offer a range of options, from a romantic sail on a traditional wooden boat to a lively party on a catamaran.
It’s a great way to enjoy the beauty of the island from a different perspective, as you sail around the coastline and watch the sun dip below the horizon. It’s a perfect way to end your day on the island and create unforgettable memories.
19. Paradise Sunset Bar
Paradise Sunset Bar is a popular spot on Gili T to catch the sunset while enjoying a refreshing drink. Located on the western side of the island, the bar offers stunning views of the ocean and the sun setting behind Bali’s Mount Agung in the distance.
The bar has a laid-back atmosphere, with bean bags and low tables on the beach for guests to relax and enjoy the view. They serve a range of cocktails, beers, and other beverages, and also offer a small selection of food. As the sun sets, the bar transforms into a lively spot with live music and fire dancing performances. It’s a perfect spot to unwind and soak up the island vibes.
20. Sunset Point
Different from Sunset Beach, Sunset Point is located on the western side of the island and is a hilltop viewpoint that offers panoramic views. The journey to Sunset Point includes a 30-minute bike ride from the main strip. Once you arrive, you can climb to the top of the hill for an incredible view of the sunset. The atmosphere is relaxed and peaceful, with plenty of space to sit and enjoy the view.
There are also a few small warungs (local eateries) where you can grab a snack or drink while waiting for the sun to go down. It’s an excellent spot to escape the crowds and enjoy a quiet, serene sunset experience.
Where to Stay in Gili Trawangan
Gili Trawangan has plenty of accommodation that cater to every traveler type whether you’re there to pamper yourself, party with friends, or both! Here are some of my recommendations for the island:
Best Hotels in Gili Trawangan
- Havana Hideaway – with free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a bar, and a garden. The units have a terrace, a flat-screen TV, and a private bathroom with a shower. The bed and breakfast serves a continental or à la carte breakfast. You can rent bicycles to explore the area, and cycling is possible in the vicinity.
- Dream Divers Resort – is a beachfront hotel as in it’s really just a few meters away from the jetty. As you can tell from the name, it’s the place to be if you’re looking to go for some dive runs. The rooms at Dream Divers Resort have a terrace or balcony with a garden view and are equipped with a wardrobe, desk, and seating area. The rooms also feature a private bathroom with a shower or bathtub.
- Green Banana – is only 2 minutes walk away from the beach. It offers free Wi-Fi throughout the premises. The rooms overlook the gardens and feature a terrace, and private bathrooms with a shower.
Best Hostels in Gili Trawangan
- My Mate’s Place – one of the most well-known party hostels in Gili T, this is where I stayed and where I met some of the wildest people on the island. You get a free drink after check-in and there are nightly pub crawls and clubbing at the Jungle. The rooms were very clean with comfortable beds with shared bathrooms.
- Mad Monkey Gili Trawangan – offers an outdoor swimming pool, nonsmoking rooms, free Wi-Fi, and a bar. The property also features a restaurant. The rooms at the hostel have shared bathrooms equipped with a bidet. Mad Monkey also has a sun terrace.
- M Box – one of the biggest hostels on the island and has its own beach club, Margaritas Bar. The hostel is located a short 5-minute walk away from the main street, close enough for a good party but far enough for a good night’s sleep. As a party hostel, Mbox offers free shots at Margaritas Bar, free pizza nights twice a week, and a free family-style buffet every other night. The hostel has a big pool with sun beds and bean bags and holds pool parties.
How to Get Around Gili Trawangan
Really there are practically only two ways to explore the island:
- Walking: The island is small as in you can easily walk around the whole perimeter in 2 hours.
- Biking: The optimal way to explore the island, really fun way to soak in the laid-back island life.
How to Stay Safe in Gili Trawangan
While Gili Trawangan is a generally a safe destination, there are a few things to keep in mind to. One of the biggest draws of Gili Trawangan is its nightlife, with that comes its own set of troubles. I’ve seen people get too rowdy and fights breaking out. Note that there is still a police presence on the island and you risk getting publicly shamed and kicked off the island.
Drink responsibly and be aware of your surroundings. Never leave your drink unattended, as there have been reports of drink-spiking incidents on the island. Drug use is still illegal in Indonesia, and the penalties for drug offenses are often unforgiving though drugs are easily accessible on Gili T, best to err on the side of caution.
Magic mushrooms are widely-available in certain areas. Psychedelics are a certain class on their own and I can neither recommend nor condone it, just remember to practice set & setting before taking a trip.
I always recommend getting travel insurance when going to islands as things can be very unpredictable especially in Gili T.
Best Time to Visit Gili Trawangan
The best time to visit Gili Trawangan is during the dry season, which runs from May to September. During this time, the weather is generally dry, sunny, and pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 27°C (81°F) to 30°C (86°F). The water is also clearer and calmer, making it an excellent time for swimming, snorkeling, and diving.
The rainy season in Gili Trawangan runs from October to April, and rain showers and thunderstorms become a part of island life, they are unpredictable and come as fast as they go. The island floods when the rain gets too much and it can get a bit wild but still really fun in its own way. Temperatures during the rainy season range from 25°C (77°F) to 30°C (86°F).
Peak season on Gili Trawangan is from July to August, and it can be crowded and expensive during this time. If you’re looking for a quieter experience, it’s recommended to visit during the shoulder seasons of May to June and September to October.
What to Pack For Gili Trawangan
- Adapter: The island uses a Type C and Type F electrical plug.
- Power Bank: It’s also worth noting that power outages can occur on the island, especially during the rainy season, so it’s recommended to bring a portable power bank.
- Power strip: Some accommodations may provide a limited number of power outlets, so it’s a good idea to bring a power strip if you have multiple devices to charge.
- Insect repellent: Mosquitoes and other insects can be really prevalent on the island (expect double or triple the amount of insects, it’s all part of the island’s charm!)
- Cash: While there are ATMs on the island, it’s recommended to bring cash in case of any issues.
- Waterproof Bag: Bring a waterproof bag to keep your valuables safe when swimming or participating in water activities. At the same time, bring something that you can cover your normal bag with as during the rainy season, things WILL get soaked.
- Medicine: It’s always a good idea to bring a basic first aid kit, including items such as band-aids, antiseptic cream, and pain relievers as you are on an island and medical services here are a bit limited. Specifically get stomach medicine in case you get the nasty “Bali Belly.”
